PSP Video Conversion

Movies and TV shows on your PSP!

Playstation Portable is a handheld game console made by Sony in early 2000s. However, beside the video games, this little device can serve a couple of other purposes such as portable media-center ;).

You still can use it to listen to music or watch your favourite TV shows.

PSP is still a good choice to watch anime

Assuming you've already got your videos as files on local PC, the next step would be a converstion to video format supported by PSP device.

There are couple of apps able to convert the videos to such format, but the most popular and most effective one is Handbrake.
Bewlo you can find a short instruction on how to easily and quickly prepare your favourite TV shows or anime to be played on a PSP console.

Handbrake: Arguably, this is the most powerful tool for PSP video conversion - it has a ton of options and settings, which may be overwhelming at the beginning.
Fortunatelly, you need only a few clicks to prepare PSP videos with correct properties and decent quality.

First, you will need a premade config file (called 'preset') dedicated for PSP format, so you don't need to set all those audio, video or coding parameters manually.

Preset for PSP can be found on PSPunk site: https://www.pspunk.com/psp-handbrake/

Once you download and extract it, go to Handbrake app and navigate to Presets > Import From File, then select the file here. After importing the file, PSP option will become available as one of presets.

Subtitles and voice tracks:
It can also happen, that the movie subtitles are provided as a separate text file. Native PSP video player has no support for such form of subtitles, so the solution is to add the text directly to the video.

Fortunately, Handbrake has a solution for that. You just need to import your file in 'Subtitles' tab and select 'BURN IN' option before you start video conversion. This way the subtitles will be literally burned on the video track.

Some source videos can contain multiple dialogue soundtracks for various languages. On the other hand PSP player supports only single language audio track.
If you prefer watching anime with original voices over the English track, 'AUDIO' tab lets you switch between available languages.

Remember you need to perform the above actions for every file (episode/movie), as the configuration is not saved when you switch between files.
The best practice is to add the single file directly to the queue ('ADD TO QUEUE' option) before you move on to the next one.

Output video files weigh around 70-100 MB for a 25 minute episode and their quality is really satisfying on PSP screen.

Xmedia Recode

If for some reason you wouldn't like to use Handbrake, there's another tool: Xmedia Recode. It already comes with a predefined set of video formats supported by PSP and makes the overall impression of a faster and simpler tool.

However, from my observations it seems the output files are about twice as large as Handbrake ones, and the video quality is also not very good. Recode also makes the picture a bit blurry.
